Top tips to enjoy the summer during pregnancyews
Summer is finally here and nothing is more appealing than spending a day at the beach. The hot summer days are the perfect excuse to relax by the ocean with a good book while listening to the soothing melody of the waves. However, if you are pregnant during the summer months there are a few things you can do protect yourself and your baby and to make this special life stage more comfortable.
Make sure to use sunblock (SPF30 or above) not only at the beach, but every time you are outdoors. During pregnancy, hormonal changes make you more susceptible to sunburn. Moreover, exposure to UV rays should be limited, as studies have shown that UV radiation can dangerously lower folate levels. There is another reason to use sunblock religiously: sunscreen can prevent melasma, those dark and blotchy patches that many pregnant women develop on their face following sun exposure.
Don’t wait until you feel thirsty or too hot, because by that point you’ll already be dehydrated. Stay indoors during the hottest part of the day and drink plenty of liquids (avoiding caffeine) to hydrate your body from the inside out. You can also keep your skin hydrated and cool by using cold compresses or a facial mist. If you’re at the beach, always seek the shade and never expose yourself to the sun for more than 20 minutes, even if you’re wearing sunblock.
Take a break!
Because during pregnancy you’re carrying extra weight, your back, legs, and feet are under additional pressure. You can relieve some of this pressure and prevent pain by taking frequent breaks from sitting or standing when you’re at the beach, so go for a refreshing swim or a dip in the pool whenever you can.
